What is CPCS?
The Construction Plant Competency Scheme is
is the largest and most highly recognised card scheme for the plant
industry. It helps to prove workers' operating skills and health
and safety awareness and is now a requirement for most construction
sites.
How to I get my red Trained Operator Card?
By passing a theory test and practical test
for the category/categories of plant you wish to use. You may need
training before sitting the tests or you may be an experienced operator
who now needs a recognised card to prove this skill. You must pass
the theory test before attempting the practical test.
How do I upgrade to the blue Competent
Operator Card?
The red card is valid for 2 years and cannot
be renewed after this. Within the two years you need to complete
an NVQ in Plant Operations to allow you to upgrade. First Safety
Training can help you with this.
Are there any entry requirements?
You must have passed the ConstructionSkills
Health and Safety test less than 2 years before the CPCS test
you are about to take. We recommend plant operators with more than
2 years experience do a 1 day refresher course before sitting the
tests. For other candidates we would recommend you complete a full
foundation training course. Exceptions may apply if you are experienced
in another plant category, please call for details.
How do I renew a blue card?
You need to:
Pass the CSCS Health and Safety test within the past 2 years
Pass the CPCS Renewal Theory test for the categories on your card
Demonstrate ongoing practical experience (by logbook, onsite assessment
or CPCS practical test)
What if my card has expired?
If your red card has expired more than 12 months ago, you will
need to resit the theory and practical tests. Less than 12 months
ago you may be granted an extension if you enrol on an NVQ, please
call CPCS on 0844 815 7274 for more information.
The blue card is valid for 5 years. If your
card has expired less than 12 months ago, contact CPCS helpline
on 0844 815 7274 to apply for an extension to give you time to complete
the renewal requirements. If your card is more than 12 months expired
you will need to re-enter the scheme and complete all requirements
as described above.
What are Endorsements?
Some categories of plant have two or more 'Endorsements'
(or variations), for example A36 Lorry Loader can have a hook, clamshell
bucket or hydraulic clamp. To have each of these endorsements on
your card you need to complete the CPCS Practical Test for each
endorsement, however you would only need to pass the Theory Test
once for this category.
